Digest Key Bill Text WHEREAS, Sarcoma is a rare cancer of the bones or connective tissues, such as nerves, muscles, joints, fat, and blood vessels, that can arise nearly anywhere in the body; and WHEREAS, In the United States, about 17,000 individuals are diagnosed with sarcoma each year, approximately 7,600 individuals die from sarcoma each year, and about 50,000 individuals struggle with sarcoma at any given time; and WHEREAS, Each year, about 1 percent of cancers diagnosed in adults and around 15 percent of cancers diagnosed in children are sarcoma; and WHEREAS, Sarcomas can affect individuals of any age, race, gender, or socioeconomic background without discrimination; and WHEREAS, Primary bone sarcomas, including osteosarcomas and Ewing sarcomas, originate directly in the bones then spread outward from there; and WHEREAS, More than 70 subtypes of sarcoma have been identified; and WHEREAS, The potential causes of sarcoma are not well understood; and WHEREAS, Physical examination, different imaging methods, and biopsy are needed to diagnose the various forms of sarcoma; and WHEREAS, Treatment for sarcoma can include surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy; and WHEREAS, Sarcoma is often misdiagnosed and underreported; and WHEREAS, The month of July is nationally recognized as Sarcoma Awareness Month to foster public education, encourage early detection, support patients and families, and promote vital research for effective therapies and cures; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly recognizes July as Sarcoma Awareness Month and emphasizes the urgent need for heightened public awareness, expanded research, and improved clinical resources regarding sarcomas and their impact on individuals and families; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
