bill; which was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and
in addition to the Committee on Education and the Workforce, for a pe-
riod to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for con-
sideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the com-
mittee concerned
A BILL
To direct the Director of the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention to submit a report to Congress on the
feasibility of reporting data relating to injuries in high
school sports to improve the safety of student athletes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the ‘‘High School Sports
4
Injury Reporting Act’’.

SEC. 2. REPORT ON FEASABILITY OF REPORTING DATA ON

INJURIES IN HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS TO IM-
2
PROVE SAFETY OF STUDENT ATHLETES.

(a) REPORT.—Not later than 180 days after the date
4
of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Health and
5
Human Services, acting through the Director of the Cen-
6
ters for Disease Control and Prevention, shall submit to
7
the appropriate congressional committees a report on high
8
school sports injury reporting.
9
(b) CONTENTS.—The report under subsection (a)
10
shall include the following:
11
(1) A survey to examine how injuries in high
12
school sports are reported in the United States, in-
13
cluding—
14
(A) the kind of data that is available;
15
(B) the tools used to report such data; and
16
(C) the effect of such reporting on the out-
17
comes relating to such injuries.
18
(2) An in-depth evaluation of a State that re-
19
quires reporting data relating to such injuries, in-
20
cluding—
21
(A) the tools that high schools in that
22
State use to conduct such reporting;
23
(B) the ability of such schools to collect
24
such data; and

(C) the effect of such reporting on the re-

covery of student athletes from such injuries.

(3) An analysis of how such reporting affects
3
the number of such injuries and the treatment relat-
4
ing to such injuries.

(4) A description of recommendations on how
6
such data reporting helps inform sports safety stat-
7
utes, policies, and practices in the State.
8
(5) What Federal statutes, policies, tools, and
9
practices could be employed to support high schools
10
nationwide in employing robust high school sports
11
injury reporting requirements and systems to im-
12
proves student athlete safety.
13
(6) Any other matters the Secretary considers
14
appropriate.

(c) DEFINITIONS.—In this section:
16
(1) APPROPRIATE
CONGRESSIONAL
COMMIT-
17
TEES.—The term ‘‘appropriate congressional com-
18
mittees’’ means—
19
(A) the Committees on Appropriations,
20
Education and the Workforce, and Energy and
21
Commerce of the House of Representatives; and
22
(B) the Committees on Appropriations and
23
Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions of the
24
Senate.

has the meaning given such term in section 8101 of

the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of
