of individuals who served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps during
World War II, and for other purposes.

Mr. LAWLER (for himself, Mr. FITZPATRICK, Mr. DELUZIO, Ms. NORTON, Ms.
DELBENE, Mr. MOULTON, and Mrs. HARSHBARGER) introduced the fol-
lowing bill; which was referred to the Committee on Veteransβ Affairs,
and in addition to the Committee on Armed Services, for a period to be
subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration
of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee con-
cerned
A BILL
To amend title 38, United States Code, to recognize and
honor the service of individuals who served in the United
States Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II, and
for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the ββUnited States Cadet
4
Nurse Corps Service Recognition Act of 2023ββ.

SEC. 2. RECOGNITION AND HONORING OF SERVICE OF IN-

DIVIDUALS WHO SERVED IN UNITED STATES

CADET NURSE CORPS DURING WORLD WAR

Section 106 of title 38, United States Code, is
5
amended by adding at the end the following new sub-
6
section:
7
ββ(g)(1)(A) Service as a member of the United States
8
Cadet Nurse Corps during the period beginning on July
9
1, 1943, and ending on December 31, 1948, of any indi-
10
vidual who was honorably discharged therefrom pursuant
11
to subparagraph (B) shall be considered active duty for
12
purposes of eligibility and entitlement to headstones,
13
markers, and other benefits under chapters 23 and 24 of
14
this title, other than such benefits relating to the inter-
15
ment or inurnment of the individual in Arlington National
16
Cemetery solely by reason of such service.

ββ(B)(i) Not later than one year after the date of the
18
enactment of this subsection, the Secretary of Defense
19
shall issue to each individual who served as a member of
20
the United States Cadet Nurse Corps during the period
21
beginning on July 1, 1943, and ending on December 31,
22
1948, a discharge from such service under honorable con-
23
ditions if the Secretary determines that the nature and
24
duration of the service of the individual so warrants.

ββ(ii) A discharge under clause (i) shall designate the
1
date of discharge. The date of discharge shall be the date,
2
as determined by the Secretary, of the termination of serv-
3
ice of the individual concerned as described in that clause.

ββ(2) An individual who receives a discharge under
5
paragraph (1)(B) for service as a member of the United
6
States Cadet Nurse Corps shall be honored as a veteran
7
but shall not be entitled by reason of such service to any
8
benefit under a law administered by the Secretary of Vet-
9
erans Affairs, except as provided in paragraph (1)(A).
10
ββ(3) The Secretary of Defense may design and
11
produce a service medal, memorial plaque or gravemarker,
12
or other commendation to honor individuals who receive
13
a discharge under paragraph (1)(B).ββ.
