What This Bill Does
This bill requires the Assistant Secretary to check broadband maps (internet availability maps) and recalculate funding amounts before distributing money from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program. The bill ensures that funding decisions are based on the most current and accurate broadband maps available.
Who It Affects
The Assistant Secretary (a government official who oversees broadband funding) and eligible entities (organizations or areas that receive broadband funding).
Key Provisions
- The Assistant Secretary must recalculate broadband funding amounts 210 days after initial funding is allocated, using the most current broadband maps available (Sec. 2(1)(B)).
- The Assistant Secretary must adjust funding amounts as needed based on the recalculation using updated maps (Sec. 2(1)(B)).
- The Assistant Secretary cannot distribute final grant funds to eligible entities until completing the recalculation and adjustment process described above (Sec. 2(2)(B)(i)).
- The Assistant Secretary must send a notice to eligible entities showing their adjusted funding amount after the recalculation is complete (Sec. 2(2)(B)).
What Changes
If this bill becomes law, broadband funding will be delayed by 210 days to allow for map updates. Eligible entities will receive adjusted funding amounts based on more accurate broadband information rather than the initial maps used for the original funding decision.
Important Definitions
None defined in bill text.
