deferment on student loans for borrowers serving in a veterinary intern-
ship or residency program.

Mr. SCHRADER (for himself and Mr. YOHO) introduced the following bill;
which was referred to the Committee on Education and Labor
A BILL
To amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to provide
for interest-free deferment on student loans for bor-
rowers serving in a veterinary internship or residency
program.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
3
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Veterinary Education
4
and Training Minimizes Educational Debt Act’’ or the
5
‘‘VET MED Act’’.

SEC. 2. DEFERMENT DURING A VETERINARY INTERNSHIP
1
OR RESIDENCY PROGRAM.

Section 455(f) of the Higher Education Act of 1965
3
(20 U.S.C. 1087e(f)) is amended—
4
(1) in paragraph (1)(A)—
5
(A) in clause (i), by striking ‘‘; or’’; and
6
(B) by adding at the end the following new
7
clause:
8
‘‘(iii) any loan made under this part
9
to a borrower who meets the requirements
10
described in subparagraph (E) of para-
11
graph (2); or’’; and
12
(2) in paragraph (2)—
13
(A) in subparagraph (C), in the matter fol-
14
lowing clause (ii), by striking ‘‘or’’ after the
15
semicolon;
16
(B) in subparagraph (D), by striking the
17
period and inserting ‘‘; or’’; and
18
(C) by adding at the end the following new
19
subparagraph:

‘‘(E) not in excess of 5 years, during which
21
the borrower is—
22
‘‘(i) enrolled in a post-graduate train-
23
ing program for veterinarians designed to
24
develop advanced levels of veterinary com-
25
petency; or
