What This Bill Does
This bill creates a process for the United States to impose sanctions (penalties that restrict assets or activities) against certain officials from Argentina. The Secretary of State must report on whether these individuals meet criteria for sanctions, and if they do, the President must impose those sanctions.
Who It Affects
Five specific Argentine officials named in the bill: Cristina Elisabet Fernández de Kirchner, Máximo Kirchner, Juan Martin Mena, Oscar Isidro José Parrilli and Carlos Alberto Zannini. The President and Secretary of State must carry out the law's requirements.
Key Provisions
* The Secretary of State must submit a report to Congress within 180 days of the bill becoming law, and then annually after that, covering each of the five named individuals (Sec. 2(a)).
* The report must describe each individual's assets, including their estimated net worth, their immediate family members' estimated net worth, and all real property, personal property, intellectual property (creative works or inventions), bank accounts, investment accounts and other financial interests (Sec. 2(a)(1)).
* The Secretary of State must determine whether each individual meets the criteria for sanctions under a previous law called section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2023 (Sec. 2(a)(2)).
* If the President determines that an individual meets the sanctions criteria, the President must impose sanctions on that individual (Sec. 2(b)).
What Changes
If this becomes law, the Secretary of State begins a reporting process on the five named Argentine officials and their assets. The President may then impose sanctions on any of them if they meet existing criteria.
Important Definitions
None defined in bill text.
