A BILL
To amend title XI of the Social Security Act to clarify
the mailing requirement relating to social security ac-
count statements.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
3
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Know Your Social Se-
4
curity Act’’.
5
SEC. 2. CLARIFICATION OF REQUIREMENT TO MAIL SOCIAL
6
SECURITY ACCOUNT STATEMENTS.
7
(a) IN GENERAL.—Section 1143 of the Social Secu-
8
rity Act (42 U.S.C. 1320b–13) is amended—

(1) in subsection (a)(1), by adding at the end
1
the following: ‘‘Such statement shall be provided by
2
mail unless the requesting individual chooses elec-
3
tronic delivery for that request.’’; and
4
(2) in subsection (c)(2)—
5
(A) by striking ‘‘Beginning not later than’’
6
and inserting ‘‘(A) Beginning not later than’’;
7
(B) by inserting ‘‘by mail’’ after ‘‘provide’’;
8
and
9
(C) by adding at the end the following:
10
‘‘(B) In any case in which the Commissioner deter-
11
mines that an eligible individual described in subpara-
12
graph (A)—
13
‘‘(i) has accessed their statement electronically
14
during the 1-year period ending on any date on
15
which the Commissioner would otherwise be required
16
to provide such statement by mail in accordance
17
with this paragraph; and
18
‘‘(ii) has declined to receive their statement by
19
mail for such period,
20
the requirements of this paragraph shall be deemed to be
21
satisfied for such period.’’.

(b) EFFECTIVE DATE.—The amendments made by
23
subsection (a) shall apply with respect to social security
