What This Bill Does
This bill adds career and technical education to the Small Business Act. It requires small business development centers and women's business centers to help small businesses hire graduates from career and technical education programs and to help those graduates start their own small businesses.
Who It Affects
Small business development centers (centers that provide advice and training to small businesses)
Women's business centers (centers that provide support specifically to women business owners)
Small businesses looking to hire workers
Graduates of career and technical education programs (students who completed job training in specific fields)
Key Provisions
The bill adds a definition of "career and technical education" based on the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (Sec. 2(a)).
Small business development centers must assist small businesses in hiring graduates from career and technical education programs or programs of study (Sec. 2(b)).
Small business development centers must assist graduates of career and technical education programs in starting up a small business (Sec. 2(b)).
Women's business centers must provide assistance to small businesses to hire graduates from career and technical education programs or programs of study (Sec. 2(c)).
Women's business centers must provide assistance to graduates of career and technical education programs to start up a small business (Sec. 2(c)).
What Changes
The Small Business Act will now include specific services related to career and technical education graduates at both small business development centers and women's business centers. These centers gain new responsibilities to connect employers with skilled workers and to help career and technical education graduates become business owners.
Important Definitions
Career and technical education: The bill defines this term as having the same meaning given in section 3 of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006.
