What This Bill Does
This bill changes the name of Salem Maritime National Historic Site to Salem Maritime National Historical Park. The bill also directs the Secretary of the Interior (the federal official who oversees national parks and public lands) to study whether additional sites in Salem, Massachusetts should be added to the park.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Salem Maritime Na-
4
tional Historical Park Redesignation and Boundary Study
5
Act’’.

SEC. 2. SALEM MARITIME NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK.
7
(a) REDESIGNATION.—The Salem Maritime National
8
Historic Site shall hereafter be known and designated as
9
the ‘‘Salem Maritime National Historical Park’’.
10
(b) REFERENCES IN LAW.—Any reference to the
11
Salem Maritime National Historic Site in any law, regula-
12
tion, map, document, record, or other paper of the United
13
States shall be deemed to be a reference to the Salem Mar-
14
itime National Historical Park.

SEC. 3. BOUNDARY STUDY.

(a) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary shall conduct a
17
boundary study to evaluate the suitability and feasibility
18
of including in the National Park System, as part of the
19
Salem Maritime National Historical Park (as redesignated
20
by section 2(a)), sites and resources in the study area as-
21
sociated with the study area’s—
22
(1) maritime history;
23
(2) coastal defenses; and

(b) REPORT.—Not later than 3 years after the date

on which funds are made available to conduct the study

required under subsection (a), the Secretary shall submit

to the Committee on Natural Resources of the House of

ural Resources of the Senate a report containing—
8
(1) the results of the study; and
9
(2) any findings, conclusions, and recommenda-
10
tions of the Secretary.

(c) DEFINITIONS.—In this section:

(1) SECRETARY.—The term ‘‘Secretary’’ means
13
the Secretary of the Interior.

(2) STUDY
AREA.—The term ‘‘study area’’
15
means Salem, Massachusetts, and its vicinity, and
16
includes the Salem Armory Visitor Center building
17
and adjacent Salem Armory Park.
