What This Bill Does
This bill directs the Federal Communications Commission to create a task force focused on sixth-generation wireless technology, known as 6G. The task force will study how this technology works, what it can be used for, and any limitations it might have.
Who It Affects
The Federal Communications Commission and the chair of the commission are directly tasked with setting up and running the task force. Members will come from communications companies, universities and public interest groups, federal government agencies, and state, local and tribal governments.
Key Provisions
- The Federal Communications Commission must create the 6G Task Force within 120 days of this law being enacted (Sec. 2(a))
- The task force must include representatives from communications companies, public interest organizations or academic institutions, and federal, state, local and tribal government representatives, unless the commission chair determines they are not trusted (Sec. 2(b))
- The task force must publish a draft report within 180 days and a final report within one year that covers the status of technology standards, possible uses of 6G technology, any limitations of the technology including supply chain and cybersecurity issues, and how governments can best work together to deploy this technology (Sec. 2(c))
- The task force must allow the public to comment on the draft report before finalizing it (Sec. 2(c))
What Changes
A new task force dedicated to studying sixth-generation wireless technology will be established within the Federal Communications Commission. This task force will produce a report on 6G technology standards, uses, limitations and government coordination strategies.
Important Definitions
- "Not trusted" means an entity owned by, controlled by, or influenced by a foreign adversary, or one that the commission chair determines poses a threat to national security (Sec. 2(d))
