Nevada) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Com-
mittee on Veterans’ Affairs
A BILL
To amend title 38, United States Code, to improve the
recruitment of physicians in the Department of Veterans
Affairs.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
3
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Get Veterans a Doctor
4
Now Act’’.
5
SEC. 2. RECRUITMENT OF PHYSICIANS IN DEPARTMENT OF
6
VETERANS AFFAIRS.
7
(a) IN GENERAL.—Section 7402(b)(1) of title 38,

United States Code, is amended—

(1) by inserting ‘‘or to be offered a contingent
1
appointment to such position,’’ after ‘‘position,’’; and
2
(2) by striking subparagraph (B) and inserting
3
the following new subparagraph (B):
4
‘‘(B)(i) have completed a residency program
5
satisfactory to the Secretary; or
6
‘‘(ii) with respect to an offer for a contingent
7
appointment upon the completion of a post-graduate
8
training program, complete such a residency pro-
9
gram by not later than two years after the date of
10
such offer; and’’.

(b) OVERSIGHT OF GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
12
PROGRAMS.—The Secretary shall—
13
(1) ensure that a recruiter or other similar offi-
14
cial of each Veterans Integrated Service Network
15
visits, not less than annually, each allopathic and os-
16
teopathic teaching institution with a graduate med-
17
ical education program within the Network to re-
18
cruit individuals to be appointed to positions in the
19
Veterans Health Administration; and
20
(2) submit to Congress an annual report on the
21
implementation of paragraph (1), including the suc-
22
cess of such recruiting efforts.
