RECOGNITION AND HONORING OF SERVICE OF 1 INDIVIDUALS WHO SERVED IN UNITED 2 STATES CADET NURSE CORPS DURING 3 WORLD WAR II. 4 (a) DETERMINATION OF ACTIVE MILITARY SERV- 5 ICE.— 6 (1) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary of Defense 7 shall be deemed to have determined under subpara- 8 graph (A) of section 401(a)(1) of the GI Bill Im- 9 provement Act of 1977 (Public Law 95–202; 38 10 U.S.C. 106 note) that the service of the organization 11 known as the United States Cadet Nurse Corps dur- 12 ing the period beginning on July 1, 1943, and end- 13 ing on December 31, 1948, constitutes active mili- 14 tary service. 15 (2) ISSUANCE OF DISCHARGE.—Not later than 16 one year after the date of the enactment of this Act, 17 the Secretary shall, pursuant to subparagraph (B) of 18 such section, issue to each member of such organiza- 19 tion a discharge from service of such organization 20 under honorable conditions where the nature and 21 duration of the service of such member so warrants. 22 (b) BENEFITS.— 23 (1) STATUS AS A VETERAN.—Except as other- 24 wise provided in this subsection and notwithstanding 25 any other provision of law, an individual who re- 26 VerDate Sep 11 2014 04:33 Apr 13, 2019 Jkt 089200 PO 00000 Frm 00002 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6201 E:\BILLS\H2056.IH H2056 kjohnson on DSK79L0C42 with BILLS 3 •HR 2056 IH ceives a discharge under subsection (a)(2) for service 1 shall be honored as a veteran but shall not be enti- 2 tled by reason of such service to any benefit under 3 a law administered by the Secretary of Veterans Af- 4 fairs. 5 (2) BURIAL BENEFITS.—Service for which an 6 individual receives a discharge under subsection 7 (a)(2) shall be considered service in the active mili- 8 tary, naval, or air service (as defined in section 101 9 of title 38, United States Code) for purposes of eligi- 10 bility and entitlement to benefits under chapters 23 11 and 24 of title 38, United States Code. 12 (3) MEDALS OR OTHER COMMENDATIONS.—The 13 Secretary of Defense may design and produce a 14 service medal or other commendation to honor indi- 15 viduals who receive a discharge under subsection 16 (a)(2). 17 Æ VerDate Sep 11 2014 04:33 Apr 13, 2019 Jkt 089200 PO 00000 Frm 00003 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6301 E:\BILLS\H2056.IH H2056 kjohnson on DSK79L0C42 with BILLS
