To amend the National Science Foundation Authorization Act of 1988 to
direct the award of Presidential awards for excellence in teaching of
mathematics and science to more teachers from the territories, and
for other purposes.

duced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Science,

A BILL
To amend the National Science Foundation Authorization
Act of 1988 to direct the award of Presidential awards
for excellence in teaching of mathematics and science
to more teachers from the territories, and for other pur-
poses.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
3
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘STEM Educator
4
Awards Equity Act’’.

SEC. 2. PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN

MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING.

(a) IN GENERAL.—Section 117(a) of the National
3
Science Foundation Authorization Act of 1988 (42 U.S.C.
4
1881b(a)) is amended—
5
(1) in subparagraph (B)—
6
(A) by striking ‘‘108’’ and inserting
7
‘‘110’’;
8
(B) by striking clause (iv);
9
(C) in clause (v), by striking the period at
10
the end and inserting ‘‘; and’’;
11
(D) by redesignating clauses (i), (ii), (iii),
12
and (v) as subclauses (I), (II), (III), and (IV),
13
respectively, and moving the margins of such
14
subclauses (as so redesignated) two ems to the
15
right; and
16
(E) by striking ‘‘In selecting teachers’’ and
17
all that follows through ‘‘two teachers—’’ and
18
inserting the following:

‘‘(C) In selecting teachers for an award au-
20
thorized by this subsection, the President shall
21
select—
22
‘‘(i) at least two teachers—’’; and
23
(2) in subparagraph (C), as designated by para-
24
graph (1)(D), by adding at the end the following:
25
‘‘(ii) at least one teacher—

‘‘(I) from the Commonwealth of

the Northern Mariana Islands;
2
‘‘(II) from American Samoa;
3
‘‘(III) from the Virgin Islands of
4
the United States; and
5
‘‘(IV) from Guam.’’.

(b) EFFECTIVE DATE.—The amendments made by
7
subsection (a) shall apply with respect to awards made on
8
or after the date of the enactment of this Act.
