duced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Over-

A BILL
To amend title 5, United States Code, to provide that chil-
dren of certain permanently disabled or deceased vet-
erans shall be preference eligible for purposes of appoint-
ments in the civil service, and for other purpose.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
3
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Gold Star Children
4
Act’’.

SEC. 2. PREFERENCE ELIGIBLE STATUS FOR CHILDREN OF

CERTAIN PERMANENTLY DISABLED OR DE-
2
CEASED VETERANS.

Section 2108(3) of title 5, United States Code, is
4
amended—
5
(1) in subparagraph (G), by striking ‘‘and’’ at
6
the end;
7
(2) in subparagraph (H), by inserting ‘‘and’’
8
after the semicolon; and
9
(3) by inserting before the matter following
10
subparagraph (H) the following new subparagraph:
11
‘‘(I) the child (including an adopted child,
12
recognized natural child, stepchild, or foster
13
child) of—
14
‘‘(i) an individual who lost his or her
15
life under honorable conditions while serv-
16
ing in the armed forces during a period
17
named by paragraph (1)(A); or
18
‘‘(ii) a service-connected permanently
19
and totally disabled veteran;’’.
