SHORT TITLE. 1 This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Japanese American 2 Confinement Education Act Norman Y. Mineta Japanese 3 American Confinement Education Act’’. 4 SEC. 2. JAPANESE AMERICAN CONFINEMENT EDUCATION 5 GRANTS. 6 Public Law 109–441 (120 Stat. 3290) is amended— 7 (1) in section 2, by adding at the end the fol- 8 lowing: 9 ‘‘(4) JAPANESE AMERICAN CONFINEMENT EDU- 10 CATION GRANTS.—The term ‘Japanese American 11 Confinement Education Grants’ means competitive 12 grants, awarded through the Japanese American 13 Confinement Sites Program, for Japanese American 14 organizations to educate individuals, including 15 through the use of digital resources, in the United 16 States on the historical importance of Japanese 17 American confinement during World War II, so that 18 present and future generations may learn from Jap- 19 anese American confinement and the commitment of 20 the United States to equal justice under the law. 21 ‘‘(5) JAPANESE AMERICAN ORGANIZATION.— 22 The term ‘Japanese American organization’ means a 23 private nonprofit organization within the United 24 States established to promote the understanding and 25 appreciation of the ethnic and cultural diversity of 26 VerDate Sep 11 2014 22:48 Nov 14, 2022 Jkt 039200 PO 00000 Frm 00002 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6201 E:\BILLS\H1931.RS H1931 kjohnson on DSK79L0C42PROD with BILLS 3 HR 1931 RS1S the United States by illustrating the Japanese 1 American experience throughout the history of the 2 United States.’’; and 3 (2) in section 4— 4 (A) by inserting ‘‘(a) IN GENERAL.—’’ be- 5 fore ‘‘There are authorized’’; 6 (B) by striking ‘‘$38,000,000’’ and insert- 7 ing ‘‘$80,000,000’’; and 8 (C) by adding at the end the following: 9 ‘‘(b) JAPANESE AMERICAN CONFINEMENT EDU- 10 CATION GRANTS.— 11 ‘‘(1) IN GENERAL.—Of the amounts made 12 available under this section, not more than 13 $10,000,000 shall be awarded as Japanese American 14 Confinement Education Grants to Japanese Amer- 15 ican organizations.
