A BILL
To amend title 10, United States Code, to authorize the
Defense Language Institute to award a Bachelor of Arts
degree in a foreign language, and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Defense Language Im-
4
provement Act’’ or the ‘‘DLI Act’’.

SEC. 2. DEFENSE LANGUAGE INSTITUTE FOREIGN LAN-

GUAGE CENTER.

(a) AUTHORITY
TO
AWARD
BACHELOR’S
DE-
3
GREES.—Section 2168 of title 10, United States Code, is
4
amended—
5
(1) in the section heading, by striking ‘‘Asso-
6
ciate’’ and inserting ‘‘Associate or Bachelor’’;
7
and
8
(2) by amending subsection (a) to read as fol-
9
lows:
10
‘‘(a) Subject to subsection (b), the Commandant of
11
the Defense Language Institute may confer—
12
‘‘(1) an Associate of Arts degree in a foreign
13
language upon any graduate of the Foreign Lan-
14
guage Center of the Institute who fulfills the re-
15
quirements for that degree; or
16
‘‘(2) a Bachelor of Arts degree in a foreign lan-
17
guage upon any graduate of the Foreign Language
18
Center of the Institute who fulfills the requirements
19
for that degree.’’.
20
(b) CLERICAL AMENDMENT.—The table of sections
21
at the beginning of chapter 108 of title 10, United States
22
Code, is amended by striking the item relating to section
23
2168 and inserting the following new item:
