To amend title 38, United States Code, to direct the Secretary of Veterans
Affairs to include the KIA, MIA, and POW acronyms on headstones
and markers furnished by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

A BILL
To amend title 38, United States Code, to direct the Sec-
retary of Veterans Affairs to include the KIA, MIA,
and POW acronyms on headstones and markers fur-
nished by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. INCLUSION OF KIA, MIA, AND POW ACRONYMS
3
ON HEADSTONES AND MARKERS FURNISHED
4
BY DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS.

Section 2306(c) of title 38, United States Code, is
6
amended—

(1) by striking ‘‘A headstone or marker fur-
1
nished’’ and inserting ‘‘(1) A headstone or marker
2
furnished’’; and
3
(2) by adding at the end the following new
4
paragraph:
5
‘‘(2)(A) The Secretary shall permit the following
6
acronyms to be included on a headstone or marker under
7
subsection (a), (b), or (d) of this section:
8
‘‘(i) ‘KIA’ for an individual killed in action.
9
‘‘(ii) ‘MIA’ for an individual who was miss-
10
ing in action.

‘‘(iii) ‘POW’ for an individual who was a
12
prisoner of war.
13
‘‘(B) The Secretary may not count an acronym in-
14
cluded on a headstone or marker under subparagraph (A)
15
towards any character or line limit for such headstone or
16
marker.’’.
