DESIGNATION OF AND REFERENCES TO TAIWAN 1 REPRESENTATIVE OFFICE. 2 (a) STATEMENT OF POLICY.—It shall be the policy 3 of the United States, consistent with the Taiwan Relations 4 Act (22 U.S.C. 3301 et seq.) and the Six Assurances, to 5 provide the people of Taiwan with de facto diplomatic 6 treatment equivalent to foreign countries, nations, states, 7 governments, or similar entities, and, consistent with this 8 policy, to rename the ‘‘Taipei Economic and Cultural Rep- 9 resentative Office’’ in the United States as the ‘‘Taiwan 10 Representative Office’’. 11 (b) RENAMING.—The Secretary of State shall seek 12 to enter into negotiations with the Taipei Economic and 13 Cultural Representative Office to rename its office in the 14 District of Colombia the ‘‘Taiwan Representative Office’’. 15 (c) REFERENCES.—If the Taipei Economic and Cul- 16 tural Representative Office is designated as the Taiwan 17 Representative Office, any reference in a law, map, regula- 18 tion, document, paper, or other record of the United 19 States Government to the Taipei Economic and Cultural 20 Representative Office shall be deemed to be a reference 21 to the Taiwan Representative Office, including for all offi- 22 cial purposes of the Government of the United States, all 23 courts of the United States, and any proceedings therein. 24 (d) RULE OF CONSTRUCTION.—Nothing in this sec- 25 tion shall be construed as entailing restoration of diplo- 26 VerDate Sep 11 2014 05:31 May 19, 2023 Jkt 039200 PO 00000 Frm 00002 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6201 E:\BILLS\H3171.IH H3171 kjohnson on DSK79L0C42PROD with BILLS 3 •HR 3171 IH matic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan) or 1 altering the position of the United States with respect to 2 the international status of Taiwan. 3 Æ VerDate Sep 11 2014 05:31 May 19, 2023 Jkt 039200 PO 00000 Frm 00003 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6301 E:\BILLS\H3171.IH H3171 kjohnson on DSK79L0C42PROD with BILLS
