RES. 24 IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AUGUST 2, 2019 Referred to the Committee on Agriculture CONCURRENT RESOLUTION Recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Food and Nutrition Service of the Department of Agriculture. Whereas the Food and Nutrition Service was founded on Au- gust 8, 1969, and has worked in a public-private partner- ship to reduce food insecurity and promote nutritious diets among the people of the United States; Whereas the Food and Nutrition Service partners with State and local governments, Tribal organizations, school sys- tems, nonprofit organizations, private sector companies, and faith-based organizations— (1) to address hunger, poverty, and nutrition; and (2) to provide support to over 36,000,000 people in the United States who live in households that face hun- ger on a daily basis; Whereas the Food and Nutrition Service administers 15 nu- trition assistance programs that leverage the agricultural abundance of the United States to ensure that children, VerDate Sep 11 2014 01:34 Aug 03, 2019 Jkt 089200 PO 00000 Frm 00001 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6300 E:\BILLS\SC24.RFH SC24 SSpencer on DSKBBXCHB2PROD with BILLS 2 SCON 24 RFH seniors, and low-income individuals and families have ac- cess to nutritious food; Whereas the programs of the Food and Nutrition Service reach 1 in 4 people in the United States each year; Whereas it is the mission of Food and Nutrition Service to increase food security and reduce hunger while maintain- ing the integrity and efficiency of programs that provide nutrition assistance to the people of the United States when those people are in need; and Whereas the Food and Nutrition Service co-develops the Die- tary Guidelines for Americans, which provide science- based nutrition recommendations and serve as the cor- nerstone of Federal nutrition policy: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives 1 concurring), that Congress— 2 (1) recognizes the valuable historic and contin- 3 ued contributions of the Food and Nutrition Service 4 and the employees of the Food and Nutrition Service 5 to the nutrition, health, and well-being of the people 6 of the United States; 7 (2) commends the partnership efforts of States, 8 territories, local governments, Tribal organizations, 9 school systems, nonprofit charitable organizations, 10 private sector companies, and community-based or- 11 ganizations to end hunger and provide nutritious 12 food to the people of the United States; 13 (3) encourages continued efforts— 14 VerDate Sep 11 2014 01:34 Aug 03, 2019 Jkt 089200 PO 00000 Frm 00002 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6201 E:\BILLS\SC24.RFH SC24 SSpencer on DSKBBXCHB2PROD with BILLS 3 SCON 24 RFH (A) to educate the people of the United 1 States on the importance of eating nutritiously; 2 and 3 (B) to provide nutrition assistance to all 4 people of the United States when those people 5 are in need; 6 (4) recognizes that the Food and Nutrition 7 Service uses the bounty of the farmers and ranchers 8 of the United States to reduce food insecurity; and 9 (5) recognizes and reaffirms the commitment of 10 the United States to— 11 (A) ending hunger in the United States; 12 and 13 (B) continuing to lead the world in ending 14 hunger worldwide. 15 Passed the Senate July 31, 2019.
