SHORT TITLE. 3 This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Route 66 National 4 Historic Trail Designation Act’’. 5 SEC. 2. DESIGNATION OF THE ROUTE 66 NATIONAL HIS- 6 TORIC TRAIL. 7 Section 5(a) of the National Trails System Act (16 8 U.S.C. 1244(a)) is amended by adding at the end the fol- 9 lowing: 10 ‘‘(31) ROUTE 66 NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL.— 11 ‘‘(A) IN GENERAL.—The Route 66 Na- 12 tional Historic Trail, a trail that includes all 13 the alignments of U.S. Highway 66 in existence 14 between 1926 and 1985, extending along a 15 route of approximately 2,400 miles from Chi- 16 cago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, as 17 generally depicted on the map entitled ‘Route 18 66 National Historic Trail, Proposed Route’, 19 numbered P26/141,279, and dated December 20 2017. 21 ‘‘(B) AVAILABILITY OF MAP.—The map 22 described in subparagraph (A) shall be on file 23 and available for public inspection in the appro- 24 VerDate Sep 11 2014 03:51 Dec 08, 2022 Jkt 039200 PO 00000 Frm 00003 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6201 E:\BILLS\H3600.RH H3600 kjohnson on DSK79L0C42PROD with BILLS 4 •HR 3600 RH priate offices of the National Park Service, De- 1 partment of the Interior. 2 ‘‘(C) ADMINISTRATION.—The Route 66 3 National Historic Trail shall be administered by 4 the Secretary of the Interior, acting through 5 the Director of the National Park Service. Such 6 administration shall be conducted in a manner 7 that respects and maintains the idiosyncratic 8 nature of the Route 66 National Historic Trail. 9 ‘‘(D) LAND ACQUISITION.—The United 10 States may not acquire for the Route 66 Na- 11 tional Historic Trail any land or interest in 12 land— 13 ‘‘(i) outside the exterior boundary of 14 any federally managed area without the 15 consent of the owner of the land or interest 16 in land; or 17 ‘‘(ii) that extends more than an aver- 18 age of one-quarter of a mile on either side 19 of the trail. 20 ‘‘(E) NO BUFFER ZONE CREATED.—Noth- 21 ing in this Act, the acquisition of the land or 22 an interest in land authorized by this Act, or 23 the management plan for the Route 66 Na- 24 tional Historic Trail shall be construed to cre- 25 VerDate Sep 11 2014 03:51 Dec 08, 2022 Jkt 039200 PO 00000 Frm 00004 Fmt 6652 Sfmt 6201 E:\BILLS\H3600.RH H3600 kjohnson on DSK79L0C42PROD with BILLS 5 •HR 3600 RH ate buffer zones outside of the Trail.
